Rains to resume as cyclone Funso moves away from the southern African region

AS tropical cyclone Funso moves ever southward on the eastern shores of southern Africa, Namibia can expect more rain in the next week.

Cyclone Funso has been moving along the Mozambique channel for more than a week now, causing stormy havoc in the region. Namibia Meteorological Service forecaster Olga Tjiueza said on Friday that the dry weather across Namibia last week was caused by the cyclone withdrawing moisture from the air.She said since the cyclone seems to be moving away from the southern tip of Africa, ‘we can expect developments over Namibia’.These developments include rain initially concentrated over the northern, north-eastern and eastern parts of the country from the past weekend. But from yesterday, the weather bureau expected the rain to extend southwards to the central parts of Namibia. ‘We can expect a few showers,’ Tjiueza said. From tomorrow onwards, widespread showers will be maintained in the north-eastern parts of Namibia as well as the central-northern parts. Tjiueza said by Wednesday the rains will be spreading southwards again, but most rain will again be concentrated on the eastern half of the country. The south can expect a few showers from tomorrow to Wednesday, she added. At the coast the weather bureau forecast ‘fresh to strong southerly to south-easterly winds with cloudy spells along the coastline’.
