Quo Vadis Affirmative Action?

Quo Vadis Affirmative Action?

I AM concerned that some companies are not taking the Government policy on affirmative action seriously because if you visit their offices you only see either whites or coloureds and only sometimes a handful of blacks.

It’s really depressing to see this after 17 years of independence. Alexander Forbes, Prosperity Health, Bank Windhoek, NMC, Sanlam, Standard Bank, Wesbank, FNB and etc, should please stop these practices because they are promoting segregation.I urge the Government to intervene in this matter quickly because this should not be tolerated in Namibia anymore.Financial institutions should also start advertising their entry-level vacancies and stop promoting nepotism.Big Madala Via e-mail Note: The issue is of course deeper than your letter portrays.Affirmative action applies to all previously disadvantaged people, whether black or coloured, and all women and the handicapped for that matter. The question is whether we should be making a further distinction between people of colour i.e.black or brown? In terms of the Act all the companies you mention are obliged to comply with the Employment Equity Commission and perhaps it is time they clarify abovementioned issues to the broader public to contribute towards greater understanding of these matters.EdAlexander Forbes, Prosperity Health, Bank Windhoek, NMC, Sanlam, Standard Bank, Wesbank, FNB and etc, should please stop these practices because they are promoting segregation.I urge the Government to intervene in this matter quickly because this should not be tolerated in Namibia anymore.Financial institutions should also start advertising their entry-level vacancies and stop promoting nepotism.
