MARC Pritzen took the individual honours, while Simonis Storm powered by Hollard took the team honours at the second leg of the Nedbank Windhoek Pedal Power series on the Dordabis Road on Sunday.
Pritzen, the former South African u23 road race champion, competed as a guest rider for the Cymot Racing Team, and won the race over about 100km after beating Drikus Coetzee and Daniel Abraham in a sprint to the line.
Pritzen won the race in a time of two hours 26 minutes 13 seconds, while Coetzee of Team Simonis Storm powered by Hollard came second in the same time, and Daniel Abraham of Team Mannie’s Bike Mecca third a further second behind.
They were followed by Hugo Hahn of Team Cycletec powered by Hollard (2:26:55), Ingram Cuff of Simonis Storm (2:26:55) and Brandon Plaatjies of Team NCCS (2:26:56).
After the race, Pritzen said he had a great time.
“It was a really awesome race and I really had fun today. We decided to attack at 9km, it wasn’t really planned but the opportunity presented itself and then Drikus and Daniel and I worked well together. We opened up a gap on the rest of the field and then tactics started to play a big role and it was a bit of cat and mouse until the end. I managed to take some points for Cymot on the team hotspots and then managed to win the individual race as well,” he said.
Pritzen thanked Team Cymot for flying him up for the race.
“I’m very happy with the team, they flew me up from South Africa and I’m really thankful for that, because it gives me some opportunity to race again. There’s no racing in South Africa at the moment and the roads here are much safer, so to be able to train here in Namibia is just paradise. To get some safe hours on the bike and to be able to race is just great and I want to thank Axel (Theissen) and Pierre (Knoetze) for getting me here and I’m thankful that I can be part of the Cymot team,” he said.
Pritzen said he hoped to leave for Europe soon where he hoped to do well.
“My aim there is definitely to get some good results and to try and get a pro contract at the end of the season.”
Team Cymot Racing had won the first leg of the series a week ago, but on Sunday, Team Simonis Storm powered by Hollard pipped them to the post.
Simonis Storm won in a total time of seven hours 20 minutes 31 seconds (7:20:31), followed by Cymot Racing Team (7:21:01) and Mannie’s Bike Mecca (7:21:24).
In the women’s individual race Risa Dreyer of Mannie’s Bike Mecca beat her team mate Vera Adrian in a sprint to the line to win in 2:20:37.
Gabriela Raith of Team Cymot Racing led in the chasing pack, more than a minute behind in 2:21:42, followed by Anneke Steenkamp (Cycletec powered by Hollard) and Michelle Doman of Team Food Lover’s Market.
Mannie’s Bike Mecca won the women’s team category in seven hours 2 minutes (7:02:00), followed by Cymot Racing Team (7:05:09) and Cycletec powered by Hollard (7:05:21).
