President urges Namibians to respect culture

President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah has called on people to respect their culture as a guiding tool.

She said this during the Omagongo Festival which took place at the Omhedi Palace in the Ohangwena region on Saturday.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said she feels disheartened by the fact that people have lost their cultures.

She said this can lead to lawlessness, incidents of kidnapping and murder of children, gender-based violence and domestic violence.

“We have eroded our cultures, and as your leader, I feel sad. Let’s strive to deeply understand our cultures. I would, therefore, like to urge our traditional authorities to work with the government to fight these social ills because the people who are committing those horrendous crimes are from our communities and homes.”

“They are our own people. I urge the perpetrators of these crimes to come and hand themselves into law enforcement. We will get them rehabilitated so that they can become useful members of society again,” said Nandi-Ndaitwah.
