President slams male teachers over abuse

PRESIDENT Hifikepunye Pohamba says he is deeply concerned about reports of young girls impregnated by teachers and other adult men.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the new Vilho Kaulinge Secondary School at Ondobe in the Ohangwena Region on Friday. “This situation should not be allowed to continue and our young girls should be protected from men who take advantage of these girls’ ignorance,” President Pohamba said.”These teachers are wolves in the skin of sheep, and I am calling upon the Directors of Education in the regions to tell their teachers to stop impregnating their learners,” he said.Pohamba pointed out that unwanted pregnancies were not the only result of such affairs – schoolgirls were also exposed to HIV-AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. He called on people to be vigilant and report any sexual relations between children and adults to the Police.”Having sexual relations with a minor is a criminal offence and the culprits must be brought to book,” he emphasised. The President also expressed concern about the proximity of cuca shops to schools, and the fact that some of these drinking places are owned by teachers. He asked regional government officials not to allow the establishment of bars near schools.”This situation should not be allowed to continue and our young girls should be protected from men who take advantage of these girls’ ignorance,” President Pohamba said.”These teachers are wolves in the skin of sheep, and I am calling upon the Directors of Education in the regions to tell their teachers to stop impregnating their learners,” he said.Pohamba pointed out that unwanted pregnancies were not the only result of such affairs – schoolgirls were also exposed to HIV-AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases. He asked regional government officials not to allow the establishment of bars near schools.
