President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah is mourning the death of Swapo parliamentarian James Uerikua, who died in a road accident in the Otjozondjupa region on Friday.
In a statement issued on Friday, she says: “This heartbreaking development deepens our collective grief and compounds the pain of this tragic loss.”
She extends her condolences to the nation, Uerikua’s colleagues in the National Assembly, and his bereaved family.
She describes Uerikua as a “young and promising leader, a brilliant mind, and a well-spoken voice in national discourse”.
At a time when the country faces complex challenges and requires the energy, clarity, and commitment of its finest sons and daughters, they have lost a bright light far too soon, she says.
Uerikua’s presence in the National Assembly reflected both intellect and purpose, and his contribution to the strengthening of our democracy will be remembered with deep respect, the president says.
“I am also deeply mindful that others were injured in this tragic incident. Our thoughts and prayers are with them and their loved ones during this difficult time.
“We wish
them strength, comfort, and a full and speedy recovery, and assure them of our solidarity as they receive the care and support they need,” she says.
Nandi-Ndaitwah says the incident is a reminder of the fragility of life and the urgent responsibility Namibians all share to promote road safety.
She urges all Namibians to exercise caution and responsibility on the roads.
