The Presidency has cautioned the public about an artificial intelligence (AI) video circulating on social media portraying president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Presidency identifies the video portraying Nandi-Ndaitwah as a ‘deepfake’.
“The presidency has noted with concern a fake video circulating on social media platforms, falsely portraying president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah promoting an alleged investment scheme called ‘Namibia Money AI’
“We wish to make it clear that this video is fraudulent and has been artificially
generated using AI technology (deepfake) to imitate the president’s image and voice,” reads the statement.
The statement says Nandi-Ndaitwah has no connection whatsoever to the scheme, and the claims made in the video are entirely false.
As a result, the Presidency strongly condemns this malicious use of digital technology to deceive citizens, exploit the president’s image and mislead the public for financial gain.
Such actions, the statement says, are not only unethical but also criminal under Namibian laws.
“We urge members of the public to refrain from sharing or engaging with this fake content and to report it to social media platforms and the relevant authorities,” says the statement.
The Presidency says all official communication is shared through verified Namibian Presidency platforms and trusted national media outlets.
