THE newly built Namibian Police (NamPol) national headquarters in Windhoek will be inaugurated on Friday after five years of construction.
NamPol inspector general Sebastian Ndeitunga told Nampa on Wednesday that the multimillion-dollar building will reduce the need for the police to rent multiple offices around the city.
“In the previous financial years, we used to spend millions [on rent] but now in the long term the police will use the money to invest in other capital projects such as the construction of accommodation facilities for our uniformed members,” Ndeitunga explained.
NamPol plans to build more police stations in remote areas as well because it has a backlog of similar capital infrastructure which are essential for the safety and security of the country.
Ndeitunga said there will still be some offices around town that will accommodate members of the force as they gradually relocate to the headquarters.
The new headquarters is set to accommodate over 400 staff members from various departments within the force.
“The inauguration will take place under the theme: ‘Modern Infrastructure to Enhance Policing for a Safer Namibia’ over a two-day period starting tomorrow,” Ndeitunga told Nampa.
He said the Friday event will commence with a street procession from the Windhoek Police Station to Ausspannplatz.
“The following day we will have a ceremonial parade at the Israel Iyambo Police College in Olympia to confer medals and honorary certificates on members of the force who have retired and those who have performed their duties exceptionally well over the years as is customary for police forces all over the world,” he said.
The police chief further said the need for the street procession, conferring of medals and the inauguration of the new building to be held in one event stretching over two days was to remind the public of the important role played by the police in society.
He said it is important for Namibian citizens to be involved in these activities and invited the public to witness the events, especially those related to members of the force to share in their achievements.
President Hage Geingob will be the keynote speaker at the unveiling of the inaugural plaque and touring of the state-of-the-art new NamPol headquarters.
