Police officers’ case postponed again

TWO top Namibian Police officers who were charged with theft against the force in May are now scheduled to return to court in September.

The Police’s Special Branch Commanding Officer, Lotti Nelomba Uusiku, and Finance Division Commanding Officer, Joseph Kamati, made a second appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court yesterday. They were both charged with theft after they apparently “lost” an unspecified amount of money that was placed in the care of the Police, and was to be paid over to the State Treasury. The money is said to include bail money, informants’ rewards and subsistence and travel (S&T) allowances.Uusiku was charged with the crimes on March 23, and was joined a week later by Kamati. The two were only suspended from their positions in June – a delay that irked a number of officers who approached The Namibian. The case was postponed to allow further investigation, and to allow the two men to finalise arrangements for their legal representation. They both remain free on N$2 000 bail.
