Police investigate the death of Zambezi prison break suspect

Zambezi regional police have launched an investigation into the death of one of the inmates who escaped from the Katima Mulilo Police Station holding cells last week.

Katima Mulilo Police Station commander chief inspector Charles Mayumbelo yesterday said they were alerted by the public on Saturday about the body of a male found along a private road west of Katima Mulilo Abattoir and Puma Service Station.

He said when they got there, they identified the body as one of the inmates who escaped, but authorities are withholding his name until next of kin are notified.

“We suspect that he died as a result of the injuries he sustained when he jumped off the road, as his body was found with swollen feet and legs. However, preliminary investigations also indicate that he might have died somewhere else and was dumped there. We are still investigating the matter, and we will know more after the postmortem is done,” Mayumbelo said.

He said many of the other inmates that were re-arrested also sustained various injuries to their bodies as they jumped off a six-metre-high roof and landed on the concrete floor.

Mayumbelo said they have re-arrested five within the region, while two were arrested in Zambia.

They are still searching for Masule ‘Nine’ Mutolwa and three other suspects.

“We would like to urge the public not to try and apprehend these remaining suspects but rather report them to us, as they are very dangerous,” he said.

Mutolwa and the 11 other suspects escaped at around 01h00 last Monday by cutting through an iron ventilation section of the roof in the cell, using saw blades smuggled in.
