Police arrest one of the suspected taxi robbery ‘masterminds’

The police have arrested one of the two men wanted for a series of taxi-related robberies and kidnappings in Windhoek and Oshakati.

Isak Nuuyoma, also known as Esko, was taken into custody on Thursday night.

He and Hainghumbi Pinehas were previously identified as the alleged masterminds behind crimes involving fake taxis used to lure and rob passengers.

“He was taken into custody on Thursday night in Okahandja,” deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi said on Friday.

At least eight cases with the same modus operandi had been reported in the Khomas and Oshana regions. Three other suspects connected to the syndicate had already been arrested in Windhoek prior to Nuuyoma’s arrest.

Investigations revealed that the suspects used vehicles with false registration plates and fake identification numbers, posing as legitimate taxis. Shikwambi urged the public to remain vigilant, share taxi details with family or friends before boarding, and report any suspicious activity immediately.

Anyone with information about Pinehas’ whereabouts can contact deputy commissioner Chrispin Mubebo at 081 126 8888 or chief inspector Simeon Nghilalulwa at 081 256 0988.
