Polar Pistol shoots to July Handicap triumph

HORSE Polar Pistol became the new champion of the 2007 July Handicap at the Windhoek Turf Club on Saturday.

Polar Pistol powered to victory in the 1 900 metre race, crossing the line at least three meters in front of second-placed Moskovskaya, with Otto’s Den owned by the young Henzel Feris, coming in third. Another favourite, Deep Impact managed fourth place, while Porto Venere which was also highly regarded, failed to make it into the top three spots.Owner of Polar Pistol, Emile van Wyk walked away with a handsome N$2 250 for his horse which took top honours, while Joggie van Wyk who owns Moskovskaya, took home N$1 350.The third and fourth placed finishers received N$900 and N$400 respectively.Chairman of the Windhoek Turf Club, Henry Feris, described the race as one of the best as the top three finishers had been predicted as such.”The whole event was held in good spirit, but we were a bit disappointed with the crowd attendance.Maybe it is because of the cold”, he said.Despite that, Feris said the competition attracted top quality horses and it was worth the effort made by the sponsors to invest in the July Handicap and the respective races. In other races, familiar favourite Kings Lodge, took top honours in the C Division which was covered over 1 700m, with Shock-Em owned by Bobby van Wyk coming in second.Royal Secret, which is owned by Immozine Madjiedt was third in that division.Kings Lodge, which is owned by the Freygang and Christians family, was also handsomely rewarded with N$2 000 in prize money. In the D Division, Young Sid impressed by taking the first spot of a distance of 1 700m, with Fencing Master following into second spot.Dominici was third. The Maiden Graduation division which also stretches over 1 700m was scooped by Time Bomb which is in the stable of Bobby van Wyk, while Midnight dancer made sure to clinch the second place. In third was Magnetic Touch. There was also a lot of drama in the Namibian Breed Division, which saw Rocket crossing the line first, while Beauty and Junior followed in second and third spots respectively.Fastman, which is owned by Herman van Wyk was not too fast in the D Division over 400m after it was beaten to the post by Time Bomb, while Dominici claimed the third spot.Another favourite, Deep Impact managed fourth place, while Porto Venere which was also highly regarded, failed to make it into the top three spots.Owner of Polar Pistol, Emile van Wyk walked away with a handsome N$2 250 for his horse which took top honours, while Joggie van Wyk who owns Moskovskaya, took home N$1 350.The third and fourth placed finishers received N$900 and N$400 respectively.Chairman of the Windhoek Turf Club, Henry Feris, described the race as one of the best as the top three finishers had been predicted as such.”The whole event was held in good spirit, but we were a bit disappointed with the crowd attendance.Maybe it is because of the cold”, he said.Despite that, Feris said the competition attracted top quality horses and it was worth the effort made by the sponsors to invest in the July Handicap and the respective races. There was also a lot of drama in the Namibian Breed Division, which saw Rocket crossing the line first, while Beauty and Junior followed in second and third spots respectively.Fastman, which is owned by Herman van Wyk was not too fast in the D Division over 400m after it was beaten to the post by Time Bomb, while Dominici claimed the third spot.
