Pohamba urges Nandi-Ndaitwah to carry on with development

Former president Hifikepunye Pohamba on Thursday urged president-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah to continue the work of founding president Sam Nujoma and previous presidents.

Pohamba said this at Nujoma’s first regional memorial service at the Nujoma residence at Etunda village in the Omusati region.

When Nandi-Ndaitwah takes over as the next president in a few weeks’ time, she should ensure stability is brought to the Namibian people, Pohamba said.

He said she should ensure the government delivers on development, maintain Swapo’s leadership and work hard for the Namibian people.

He said: “Nujoma has completed his task, and I have done my part as the second president, and now when you take over the office, you should ensure that work is done.”

Nandi-Ndaitwah in turn said Namibia has lost a statesman, a people’s leader, and a man who valued peace and unity.

“Nujoma was a gift from God to the Namibian people,” she said.

“We must commit ourselves to carry on where Nujoma has left,” she said.

Nandi-Ndaitwah said Nujoma once advised her to ensure she retains the position of vice president, as it would lead to her becoming the next president.

“I have listened and followed his wisdom, and indeed, it has come to pass,” she said.
