Pohamba proposes President Street

WHILE the Windhoek City Council is considering renaming several streets after liberation heroes, including President Hifikepunye Pohamba, the head of state has made another proposal to the local authority.

The idea to rename Krupp, Malcolm Spence and Reginald Walker Streets originates from the Office of Mayor Matheus Shikongo way back in November 2004. Residents were not involved, but only City Councilors were approached to propose names.During the monthly town council meeting last Thursday, the new street names were revealed for the first time. The Mayor’s Office informed President Pohamba earlier this year that Hochland Road, which runs from Snyman Circle to Hochland Park, was to be renamed after him.In a letter dated May 10 2007, President Pohamba wrote he appreciated the consideration.”I would, however, like to propose that the street close to the new State House be named President Avenue or Street instead. This would not only honour me but all past and future presidents of this country,” the head of state suggested.”I hope this proposal will be acceptable to the Council,” the letter, signed by Pohamba, stated.Council did not vote on this proposal from State House, as it will still be discussed.St Moritz Street in Kleine Kuppe will be renamed Eneas Peter Nanyemba Street, a liberation hero and the Swapo party’s first Secretary for Defence during the liberation struggle.Nanyemba died in a mysterious car crash in Lubango, Angola in 1983.Krupp Street is to be renamed Andimba Toivo ya Toivo Street after former Mines and Energy Minister.Malcolm Spence Street is to become Moses Tjitendero Street, after the first Speaker of the National Assembly, who died 14 months ago.Reginald Walker Street is to be renamed after Jason Hamutenya Ndadi, a founder member of the Ovambo Peoples’ Organisation, which later became Swapo.Ndadi was also a top commander of the Peoples’ Liberation Army of Namibia (Plan).Residents were not involved, but only City Councilors were approached to propose names.During the monthly town council meeting last Thursday, the new street names were revealed for the first time. This would not only honour me but all past and future presidents of this country,” the head of state suggested.”I hope this proposal will be acceptable to the Council,” the letter, signed by Pohamba, stated.Council did not vote on this proposal from State House, as it will still be discussed.St Moritz Street in Kleine Kuppe will be renamed Eneas Peter Nanyemba Street, a liberation hero and the Swapo party’s first Secretary for Defence during the liberation struggle.Nanyemba died in a mysterious car crash in Lubango, Angola in 1983.Krupp Street is to be renamed Andimba Toivo ya Toivo Street after former Mines and Energy Minister.Malcolm Spence Street is to become Moses Tjitendero Street, after the first Speaker of the National Assembly, who died 14 months ago.Reginald Walker Street is to be renamed after Jason Hamutenya Ndadi, a founder member of the Ovambo Peoples’ Organisation, which later became Swapo.Ndadi was also a top commander of the Peoples’ Liberation Army of Namibia (Plan).
