LOCAL footballers have been challenged to set new academic targets for themselves, Deputy Education Minister, Dr Becky Ndjoze-Ojo said at the Namibia Football Awards on Saturday night.

In her address, Ndjoze-Ojo said players should make an effort to enrol for and obtain academic qualifications at the University of Namibia, Polytechnic of Namibia or other academic institutions. “It only takes three years of commitment to get a diploma or degree.By the time the 2010 Fifa World Cup is played in South Africa, you will be a final year student in your diploma or degree programme, and I wish you luck!” she said amid loud applause from her audience.”The good thing about education is that it is forever yours. They cannot even inherit it and it is an endless journey. In fact, once you have obtained your first degree, it serves just as a springboard to another.Dear footballer, dear athlete, administrators, kindly find your passion and follow your dream.Don’t be satisfied with where you are.Reach for the stars and the sky will be the limit.”Ndjoze-Ojo said she was aware of how much money went into football but she also wanted to know how players respond to such sponsorships.”I personally and sincerely believe that an educated sportsman or woman is an empowered sport icon. So, to me, education is not just important, it is critical – it is a must-have for all Namibians. This ties in with our Government’s Policy of Education for All.So please come on board,” she pleaded.Nampa”It only takes three years of commitment to get a diploma or degree.By the time the 2010 Fifa World Cup is played in South Africa, you will be a final year student in your diploma or degree programme, and I wish you luck!” she said amid loud applause from her audience.”The good thing about education is that it is forever yours. This ties in with our Government’s Policy of Education for All.So please come on board,” she pleaded.Nampa
