Plans for more satellite police stations in Khomas

THE Namibian Police are to set up additional satellite police stations in the Khomas region.

This was announced by Khomas governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua during her third annual state of the region address on Thursday.

She said the establishment of the satellite police stations will enhance the police pro-active response to crime.

The sites identified for such police stations include Pioneerspark, Hochland Park, Otjomuise, Goreangab Dam, Havana, Okuryangava, Brakwater, Lafrenz, Kloppersdal and Eros Park.

She noted that crimes of concern in the region include assault/grievous bodily harm, housebreaking and theft, theft from motor vehicles, theft from persons, robbery, gender-based violence, murder and rape.

McLeod-Katjirua stressed that with over 90% of the Khomas region falling within the municipal jurisdiction of the City of Windhoek, her office is equally concerned about compliance to by-laws as a way of preserving public safety and order.

She said reported cases of illegal traders have increased by 191% and land invasion increased by 75% with 124 cases compared to 71 reported cases in 2016/2017.

Crime, especially armed robbery has reached alarming levels, she said, adding: “But members of the police have been equal to the task of apprehending criminals as well as recovering stolen property.”

The governor further said the Khomas police crime reduction method is to prevent reported crimes from increasing with more than five to seven per cent annually, commencing with the reported total cases during the 2016/2017 financial year as the baseline.
