Pirates on verge of history

Pirates on verge of history

ORLANDO Pirates are on the verge of making history if they win the MTC Namibia Premier League title tomorrow.

Why? Because they have never won it before. Since the club’s formation in 1963, Pirates have never scooped the premiership title and this time they will be presented with a chance of a lifetime when they meet a rather organised Mighty Gunners side at the Mokati Stadium at Otjiwarongo.Pirates, if they win, will also stop Civics from winning the league for the fourth consecutive season.Pirates chairman Mabos Vries, who played for the club and served as coach in the 1980s, says he has no doubt in his mind that they will make history tomorrow.”I will not be at the match due to other official business in the south, but I know for sure that the team will win the league. It will be history in the making because it will be the first time that this will happen since the transformation of the club to a commercial entity,” he said.Vries, a knowledgeable customer in football and who is widely known for his crisp negotiating skills, said the club used to belong to the people, but now a new era has dawned.”A new page has been turned and this club is destined for greater things,” he boasted. He said since businessman Hendrik Dawids took over at the beginning of the season, the club set itself targets of bringing in good results by assembling some of the most credible players in domestic football.Vries confirmed that the side, led by former Black Africa great Brian Isaacs, will employ all their key players and will have no mercy on Mighty Gunners which surprisingly upset Black Africa 4-0 last weekend.”The celebrations will be in Otjiwarongo. All the Buccaneers supporters should make their way to that town to witness the crowning of the new champions,” he said.Pirates, has won many cup titles in its 45-year existence, including the Mainstay Cup, Metropolitan Cup, Novel Ford Cup and the NFA Cup.The only competitions to have evaded them are the JPS Cup and the FNB Cup.The league title will possibly be their biggest triumph, as they will pocket half a million by winning it.Pirates had a great run in the league this season and that is testimony in the current standings, as their strikers are runaway goal getters with 32 goals in total, while their goalkeepers have only conceded 13 goals.Closest rivals are Civics in second spot and with 36 points and with a goal difference of 8, while Pirates have amassed 38 points with a goal difference of 19.They have both played 21 matches and will go into their last match at the weekend.Civics take on Fedics United at the Independence Stadium at the same time.Fedics have nothing to lose since they have been relegated already, but will fight to bounce out of the league on a high note with a win after they were promoted this season.See full fixtures elsewhere.Since the club’s formation in 1963, Pirates have never scooped the premiership title and this time they will
