AN 80-YEAR-OLD man has been murdered in his house at Vineta in Swakopmund.
He was found laying face down in his pajamas in his plundered room next to his bed with his hands and feet bound with shoelaces. A bandage and towel were wrapped around his mouth and nose. It is suspected that he may have smothered to death or strangled.
Two friends discovered the victim on Friday evening after he did not respond answer their phone calls. After going to his house, they saw his body through the bedroom window. The back door to the house were apparently wide open.
Sources told The Namibian that it looked like the suspects had lots of time to ransack the house, and even drank cool drinks.
“The old man died a horrible ruthless death, almost like a hate crime,” sources said.
Erongo crime investigations coordinator, Erastus Iikuyu, confirmed the incident on Saturday. He said a case of housebreaking with intent to rob, robbery and murder was opened. No arrests have been made yet, and the police are appealing for assistance from the public.
It is believed that the crime took place between Thursday morning and Friday evening.
The victim was staying alone.
Iikuyu said that preliminary investigations revealed two set of footprints entering the yard and a window that was broken from the outside through which it is suspected the suspects gained entry. A small wall-mounted safe (contents unknown), as well as a Samsung TV and Samsung camera were missing from the house.
“The suspects are unknown at this stage. The next of kin in South Africa are not yet traced,” said Iikuyu.
Anyone who witnessed the incident or has information about the suspects and their whereabouts are requested to contact their nearest police station.
