A male pedestrian was killed after being struck by a train near Okahandja on Tuesday afternoon.
TransNamib confirmed the incident in a media statement.
According to the report, the individual attempted to cross the railway line when he was struck.
Preliminary investigations show that the train was travelling at 52 kilometres per hour, which is within the regulated speed limit, TransNamib said in the statement.
The statement qouted TransNamib chief executive Desmond van Jaarsveld as having expressed condolences to the family of the deceased.
“Our thoughts are with the family and loved ones affected during this difficult time,” he said.
Van Jaarsveld also said TransNamib maintains strict safety measures, including controlled train speeds, continuous driver vigilance and clearly designated rail crossings.
He added that the company is expanding its community outreach programmes to educate the public about railway safety and the importance of keeping a safe distance from railway tracks.
