Popular Democratic Movement chief whip Deiderik Vries says police officers allegedly involved in drug abuse and drug trafficking have put the integrity of the police into question.
Vries said this on Wednesday through his notice of motion to the minister of home affairs, immigration, safety and security, Lucia Iipumbu.
“I wish to bring to the forefront a matter of serious national concern, which is the alleged compromise of certain members of the Namibian police in relation to drug abuse, drug trafficking and arrests linked to drug-related offences,” he said.
Vries added that such cases have been reported in towns such as Rehoboth, Walvis Bay, Swakopmund, Oshakati, Rundu, Katima Mulilo and Windhoek.
He said such arrests have raised serious questions about the integrity of some officers entrusted with enforcing the country’s laws.
He said at a time when communities, especially the youth are suffering from the devastating effects of drug abuse, any involvement or protection of criminal drug networks by law enforcement officers represents a direct threat to public trust, national security and the rule of law.
