Six PDM MPs demand clarity on compensation for missed parliament time

Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) member of parliament (MP) Charmaine Tjirare is calling on the National Assembly to give clarity on the lack of payment for the six members who missed out on parliament.

In 2022, the Supreme Court ruled that six PDM members were unlawfully removed from the list of candidates nominated to be elected to the National Assembly after the 2019 election, and that they were to be sworn in to the National Assembly.

The six that were sworn in 2022 are Frans Bertolini, Charmaine Tjirare, Yvette Araes, Tjekupe Maximilliant Katjimune, Raymond Reginald Diergaardt and Mike Rapuikua Venaani.

Tjirare, in her notice of questions to justice minister Yvonne Dausab on Wednesday, questioned the National Assembly’s adherence to laws and judgments.

Tjirare argued that, since their swearing-in, they have yet to be compensated for their missed time in parliament.

“We have come to the realisation that the National Assembly has developed a tendency of disregarding laws and judgment,” she said.

Tjirare has demanded clarity on the matter.
