PDK’s Kamtonyo unleashes solo project

Kamtonyo is pursuing a solo path with a new project.

KRISTIAN Kamtonyo Andreas, the PDK median, has released his solo project after 17 years with the acclaimed group.
This comes shortly after the lead singer of the group, Patrick Mwashindange released his solo album at the end of last year.

Kamtonyo says even though he went on a solo journey, he remains signed to PDK and his new project was released under PDK Entertainment.
“I’m still a PDK artist who has decided to pursue a solo project. This will provide me with a platform to do something on my own and grow as an artist on my own,” Kamtonyo.

The desire to go out and work on independent projects is what motivates their solo endeavours under the PDK name, says Kamtonyo.
According to Kamtonyo, “We do not want to sign other artists aside from ourselves. We want to test our abilities as solo vocalists for growth, and generally for the PDK brand to have more performers instead of just a band,” he says, adding that this would give them enough time to advance their jobs.

His new album is titled ‘Etako’, which translates to bring, and is also known as bring on the music.
Kamtonyo collaborated with K Ketu, Andrew on the beat, Mr Glo, Bexxa Carter, Chester, DJ Deni, and Focus on the new album. The album features artists such as Allan Jonathan, Sunny Boy, Kazlajaivas, and King Elegant.
The album contains 17 songs of varying styles, including old-school kwaito, amapiano, Afro-pop, dancehall and kwasa.

I’m working on more projects music-wise, as well as album town tours, and performances. So the album is out, and I can now be booked as a solo artist – Kamtonyo

The first song, ‘Keshe Apa Toyi’, which means wherever you are going, is more of a party song that can get you in the mood to dance.
Track 3, ‘Etako Remix’ is another hit on the album, a kwasa version of the song, while the original is amapiano. Track4, featuring Blank, titled ‘I wish’, is also one to keep an eye out for.
According to Kamtonyo, the album is more personal with a distinct sound and cannot be compared to those of PDK’s because it does not include all the singers.

“I’m working on more projects music-wise, as well as album town tours, and performances. So the album is out, and I can now be booked as a solo artist,” Kamtonyo says.
The group made its debut with the album ‘Skoko, which earned them their first Namibian music award in the best duo-group category at the 2008 Sanlam-NBC music awards. Under the PDK label, the group now has up to 12 albums.

The band continued to release music and was tied to the Omalaeti Music Production until 2017, at which point they severed ties with the company and went independent.
The group’s final album, ‘Grateful, was released in 2019 and was received positively by the audience.
