IT was PDK’s night! The group bagged two awards at the Namibia Annual Music Awards (NAMAs) virtual show, held on Saturday evening.
PDK took home the awards for best music video and best group/duo, with both categories tightly contested by the
likes of Lioness, Dixon, Kalux, Cool
Under Pressure, Ethnix, House Guru Gang.
The fifth virtual NAMAs weekend saw beautiful performances from the likes of Ethnix who made their comeback
with the song ‘Composure’, and marked Dixon’s welcome return to the NAMA stage with his hit song ‘She Has a
Man,’ Lioness turned on the stage with her song ‘Tala’ with an electrifying performance, showing just why she is
considered Namibia’s queen of rap and hip-hop.
PDK, who have only won one NAMA in the last decade, were overjoyed to add two more trophies to their
collection, and did it in style with a memorable and acrobatic performance of their hit song ‘Saka’ featuring Top
Cheri, King Elegant and Athawise.
The night also saw a fitting tribute to Tupac Shakur by three of the country’s best rappers – Jericho, KP Illest and
J Black.
The American icon may have died in 1996 but 24 years later his music and lyrics still live on.
“The NAMA special awards are reserved for any artist or group whether locally, continentally or internationally
who have cemented themselves as a legend, and this year we are bestowing this award on a man whose lyrics
were powerful, considered as the most influential rapper of all time, a man who was never afraid to address
contemporary social issues that plagued society, a man considered as a symbol of resistance and activism
against inequality”, said NAMA executive chairperson Tim Ekandjo.
The next NAMAs show will air on 10 October, and will award the best soukous/kwasa, best Afrikaans, best
Damara punch and best oviritje artists. – MTC
