The parliament has abruptly suspended the recruitment of an information commissioner and deputy, further delaying the implementation of the Access to Information Act.
In a newspaper notice on Wednesday, the parliament announced that the recruitment process for these two positions was halted.
Neither the National Assembly nor the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology have provided a reason for this.
The position of information commissioner has been created by the Access to Information Act.
The act was gazetted in 2022, but has not been fully implemented due to the absence of a dedicated commissioner.
The role of the commissioner is to promote, monitor and protect the right of access to information in Namibia.
The Namibian last month reported that the parliament had advertised the vacancy.
The incoming commissioner was set to earn N$1.4 million per year.
