Parliament opening to goahead as planned

OPEN TODAY … Parlia- ment is set to resume today as the country observes a period of mourning following the death of president hage geingob.

The official opening of the ninth session of the seventh parliament will proceed as planned today.

President Nangolo Mbumba will officiate at the session, which is scheduled to start at 14h30, noted an announcement on the parliament Facebook page.

National Council chairperson Lukas Muha called on the members to use the time to remember former president Hage Geingob, who was instrumental in the drafting of Namibia’s Constitution.

On 9 February, the country will celebrate the 34th anniversary of the Constitution.

“As we honour the life and times of our third president, may we take comfort in the realisation that he has completed his dignified life journey with a commitment to serving Namibia,” said Muha.

Fifteen bills are set to be tabled in parliament this year.

These include the divorce, marriage, public gatherings and demonstration, Namibia energy regulator, land and regional constituency development fund bills.
