Parliament back in action

PARLIAMENT will be officially opened this afternoon, with President Sam Nujoma expected to deliver his annual State of the Nation address.

The opening marks the start of the ninth session of Namibia’s Third Parliament and also the last sitting of current office bearers before voters go to the polls at the end of the year. The official programme begins at 13h30 with the arrival of parliamentarians, guests and security officials.The President’s procession is expected to arrive at the main entrance to Parliament Buildings at 14h00 and to address Parliament in the National Assembly chambers.The House is not expected to start with its formal business today to allow for a reception for guests hosted by the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mose Tjitendero.The ‘Democracy and Development Expo 2004’ in Parliament Gardens will be open to the public from 10h00.There will also be cultural performances during the course of the day, while the public will be able to view the opening of Parliament on a big screen in the gardens.Robert Mugabe Avenue between Sam Nujoma Driver and Goering Street will be closed to traffic between midday and 16h00 to facilitate the proceedings.The official programme begins at 13h30 with the arrival of parliamentarians, guests and security officials.
