Parents urged to accompany children to school

Walvis Bay circuit inspector Theresia Goagoses has urged parents with younger children to accompany them to and from school daily.

Goagoses says especially pre-primary and Grade 1 pupils are too young to walk alone as there are potential dangers on the way to school.

“Some learners walk for a long distance. It is not safe for them to go alone. The safety of the children is the responsibility of the parent, the teacher, the ministry and the government.

“Parents, please accompany the child to the school up to the gate until he or she is received by the teachers at school. Not all of us afford taxi fare. Some learners are walking. Make sure the child wakes up early and walk with him early to reach school on time.”

Some parents could be observed on Monday morning accompanying their children to school, while others asked community members to help them, as they had to go to work.

The sun rises late at the town and it is mostly foggy, often making it difficult to see oncoming vehicles.
