Over 60 dogs and cats sterilised at Kamanjab and Outjo

More than 60 cats and dogs were sterilised and vaccinated at Kamanjab and Outjo in the Kunene region by veterinarians from the Baines Mobile Animal Clinic on Monday and Tuesday.

The free operations were carried out by Dr Ian Baines from the Baines Mobile Animal Clinic in Windhoek and Dr Riamana Tjimbundu from the University of Namibia School of Veterinary Medicine.

In addition to sterilising the animals, Baines, who has been a veterinarian since 1988, also vaccinated them against various diseases.

He says some of the animals they treated at Outjo on Monday and at Kamanjab on Tuesday had transmissible diseases.

“Most of these animals were found to generally be in poor condition, and we found they were suffering from tick and flea infestations, which poses health risks to both the animals and their owners,” says Baines.

He notes that sterilising animals helps reduce the uncontrolled breeding of stray cats and dogs and improves their overall health.

The sterilisation services, which would normally cost around N$3 000 at a private clinic, were provided free of charge during the non-profit initiative.

The exercise will continue at Khorixas on Thursday.
