Oukwanyama to interview aspirant headmen

OUKWANYAMA queen Martha Kristian Nelumbu says the Oukwanyama traditional authority will interview those who aspire to be headmen or headwomen within the kingdom.

She said this through the traditional authority’s lawyer Silas Shakumu at a press conference held at Ohangwena on Thursday.

According to the queen, traditionally if a headman or headwoman dies, a relative would automatically succeed the deceased irrespective of their knowledge of Oukwanyama customary laws.

“We want to avoid such things. There must be a committee that would interview those who aspire to be headmen or headwomen. There was a suggestion by some people that headmen and headwomen must be voted in but we don’t believe it will be good as some people would pay people to vote for them,” she said.

She added that if the traditional authority allows people to vote for headmen and headwomen, even those who are not fit to lead may be elected.
