Otweya woman survives murder attempt

A 32-year-old woman survived an attempt on her life at the temporary Otweya settlement at Walvis Bay on Sunday morning.

An unknown man allegedly entered the woman’s tent and tried to strangle her.

The suspect is said to have taken the woman’s baby, but abandoned it when it started crying.

Frieda Mbango, a resident of Otweya, came across the scene at 07h00 on Sunday.

She says she realised something was wrong when she greeted the victim and there was no response, apart from the baby’s crying.

“I alerted the men in the neighbouring tents and wanted to go in and get the baby, but the others said something must be wrong because the mother was not responding to our calls, and there was a sugarlike white powder at the entrance of the tent. The tent had a cut near the entrance,” Mbango says.

Residents then called the victim’s uncle, who is a police officer.

The uncle notified the police’s Crime Investigations Unit and the Walvis Bay emergency response team.

The victim was taken to the Walvis Bay State Hospital.

She has reportedly regained consciousness.

The baby is in the care of social workers.

Police investigations continue.
