Otjiwarongo mayor Gottlieb Shivute on Friday announced that the municipality plans to this year, install a closed-circuit television (CCTV) system to enhance surveillance in areas regarded as crime hotspots in and around town.

Shivute made the announcement at the first council meeting of the Otjiwarongo Municipality held at the council chambers on Friday morning.

He said the municipality’s team of law enforcement personnel would like to acquire and use these cameras so that they serve as a deterrent intervention that should increase the likelihood of offenders being identified and apprehended.

“The presence of CCTV cameras would help reduce criminal activities such as theft, vandalism and violent crimes, and at the same time provide some valuable evidence to our law enforcement personnel, investigators and the prosecution team,” said Shivute.

The mayor said the cost of the CCTV system will be announced at a later stage once the municipality has identified the crime zones in and around the town.

“The municipality so far is confident that once this CCTV surveillance technology is acquired and installed, it will enhance public safety and foster a great sense of security for the residential houses and businesses.

Therefore, this initiative aims to create a safer and more controlled environment which will contribute to the reduction of the crime rate in Otjiwarongo,” said Shivute.
