Oshikoto pensioner arrested for abusing underage domestic worker

A 62-year-old woman from Oshiyagaya village in the Onyaanya area of the Oshikoto region has been arrested for allegedly employing and assaulting an underage domestic worker.

Namibian Police spokesperson deputy commissioner Kauna Shikwambi has confirmed the arrest, saying the suspect is expected to appear in the Ondangwa Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

According to Shikwambi, the incident occurred at Oshiyagaya village, where the suspect allegedly employed a 16-year-old Angolan girl as a domestic worker.

The police allege that the woman failed to provide the girl with food and assaulted her by beating her with a dry stick all over her body.

“It is further alleged that the suspect deceived the victim by promising to pay her for the work, which she did not do,” Shikwambi says.

The victim, originally from Calonga village in Cuvelai in Angola’s Cunene province, was treated at Onyaanya Health Centre before being admitted to Onandjokwe State Hospital.

A case has been opened at Okatope Police Station for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, and contraventions of the Child Care and Protection Act, the Labour Act, and the Combating of Trafficking in Persons Act, the police say.
