Oshakati gets new CEO

OSHAKATI town council has appointed Timoteus Namwandi as its new chief executive officer.

Oshakati mayor Leonard Hango confirmed Namwandi’s appointment yesterday to .

Namwandi is currently chief executive of Okahao town council situated about 70km west of Oshakati.

According to Hango, Namwandi appointment is with effect 1 May 2021.

“When the new council came in, we look at the credibility of the interview both written and oral and recommendations of the interview panel we recommended Timoteus Namwandi to the minister of urban and rural development for appointment.

“We believe he will be a good chief executive officer for our institution. We already gave him an offer letter and he has accepted,” the mayor said.

He said that he is aware that he was going to face criticism from Swapo for recommended Namwandi for appointment.

“Unfortunately we had to do what is right. It’s unfair for someone to come first and you don’t want to give him or her an opportunity. What is the purpose of the interview then”.

He also said they did not favour Namwandi.

“I don’t know Namwandi and I have never met him,” he said.

In his letter to Hango dated 3 March 2021 urban and development minister Erastus Uutoni said he supports Oshakati town council decision to appoint Namwandi “the highest scoring first candidate.”

The previous Oshakati council ignored recommendations by an interview committee to appoint Namwandi as Oshakati’s CEO.

The council instead appointed former chief executive officer Werner Iita, who performed second best in the interview.

The council felt Namwandi was favoured by one of the panelists.

Interviews were conducted on 7 August last year.

Iita resigned from his position in 2019 to take up a parliamentary seat but failed to secure a parliamentary seat.

Namwandi refused to comment on the matter when approached for comment this week referring the questions to Oshakati town council.
