Orange is the new black: inmates get new uniforms

THE Namibian Correctional Services (NCS) has changed offenders’ uniforms from green to orange overalls beginning this month.

In a statement issued on Friday, NCS commissioner general, Raphael Hamunyela said, “The orange uniform enhances the image and reputation of the Namibian Correctional Service as a rehabilitation institution.”

The green uniform is associated with the punitive approach of the colonial era, which no longer serves a purpose, added Hamutenya.

According to Hamunyela, orange uniforms are commonly used worldwide.

The change in uniform colour can make escaped inmates easily recognisable by the public, Hamunyela said, adding that the orange colour will also limit the risk of escape.

“The design of the uniform is very simple and well-fitted, as the male trouser has an elastic band that can easily fit around the waist,” Hamutenya said.

He said for now the orange overalls are only for male inmates. “Only male inmates incarcerated at correctional facilities countrywide have received the new orange uniform,” he said.
