Opuwo’s Water Woes

Opuwo’s Water Woes

I TOTALLY condemn NamWater Corporate Communications Manager Johannes Shigwedha who stated through the media that the water in our town (Opuwo) remains fit for human consumption as it falls in category C, and can still be consumed.

What I experienced is that water in Category C is also bacteriologically contaminated similar to water in category D. I am a resident of Opuwo and I am talking from experience.Almost each and every week I have to visit the hospital because of diarrhoea caused by the “toxic water”, so-called “brackish water with a high lime content. The majority of my fellow residents are suffering from the same problem. My question to Mr.Shigwedha is how he can claim that the brackish water (in Category C) remains fit for human consumption, although we, as residents, still suffer from diarrhoea caused by the water in Category C? I am appealing to NamWater to step in as soon as possible to help Opuwo town with a Water Purification Plant. My important point is just for Government to provide us with clean and enough water like other ethnic groups in this country and also as enshrined in our Namibian Constitution in Article 95, which guarantees the “Promotion of the welfare of the people”.Sabinah Muhipa OpuwoI am a resident of Opuwo and I am talking from experience.Almost each and every week I have to visit the hospital because of diarrhoea caused by the “toxic water”, so-called “brackish water with a high lime content. The majority of my fellow residents are suffering from the same problem. My question to Mr.Shigwedha is how he can claim that the brackish water (in Category C) remains fit for human consumption, although we, as residents, still suffer from diarrhoea caused by the water in Category C?
