The highly anticipated third edition of the Opuwo Annual Mayoral Cup is set to take place on 15 and 16 March at the Newman Katuta Sport Stadium at Opuwo.
This prestigious event aims to unite the youth, promote sportsmanship, and serve as a platform for emerging champions, while also providing marketing opportunities for local businesses and small and medium enterprises (SMEs).
The tournament has established itself as a key sporting event, offering young athletes the chance to showcase their talent in front of scouts and coaches from various teams across the country.
Since its inception in 2023, the tournament has attracted teams from as far as Windhoek, Gobabis and other regions, with several Namibia Premier Football League players spotted in action.
To maintain fair competition, the tournament is strictly for youth and grassroots teams, the organisers say. This means premier league and first division teams are not allowed to compete. However, each team may register up to three players from premier league or first division teams.
Beyond sport, the mayoral cup serves as a business platform for SMEs, allowing entrepreneurs to showcase their products and services to a wider audience.
Hengarihoff remains the tournament’s main sponsor, having invested N$50 000 in the inaugural edition in 2023.
For the 2024/25 editions, their sponsorship has doubled to N$100 000.
Organisers are calling on additional sponsors to come on board and support this growing event.
The council has plans for the tournament to eventually cater to even more sport codes and become more of a ‘mayoral games’ event.
However, for this edition the event will feature competitions in the following sport categories: youth soccer (grassroots teams), veterans/legends soccer (players aged 36 and above will be allowed to partake), netball and tug of war.
In recognition of outstanding performances, prizes will be awarded to boost the morale and grow athletes’ confidence.
To be eligible for the veterans’ section, players must be 36 years or older.
Therefore, proof of age through a valid national ID will be required before each game – no ID, no play, the organisers say.
The tournament will feature highly trained referees, certified by the Namibia Football Association and Fifa, ensuring fair and professional officiating.
The current champions, Omaheke United from Gobabis, have indicated they will be defending their title, setting the stage for an intense and exciting competition.
The Opuwo Mayoral Cup 2025 is sponsored by Hengarihoff in collaboration with the Opuwo Town Council, and is powered by the Namibian Broadcasting Corporation.
Corporate companies and individuals are welcome to come on board as sponsors or partners to help improve incentives for players.
Registration fees are as follows: youth soccer (N$1 000), veterans’ soccer (N$500), netball (N$600), and tug of war (N$500).
The registration deadline is 14 March at 14h00, with the official tournament draw scheduled for 17h00 at the Opuwo Town Council’s offices.
