OneAfrica journalist Maria Hamukwaya has been reported missing after sending a distressing message to her manager, saying she felt unsafe in a taxi in Windhoek and feared she may be abducted.
Hamukwaya’s last known contact was on 30 January when she sent her a manager a message that read: “I am in a taxi F110 I want to jump out but they want to take me with them.”
She was travelling in a red Mazda Demio taxi with the registration number F110. Her phone has since been switched off, and attempts to contact her directly have been unsuccessful.
The Windhoek City Police have said the taxi number is fake.
Future Media and OneAfrica have issued an urgent appeal to the public for any information regarding Hamukwaya’s whereabouts.
“We are deeply concerned for Maria’s safety and are calling on anyone who may have seen the taxi or has any information to come forward immediately,” the statement reads.
Authorities have been notified and a search is reportedly underway. The public is urged to contact Future Media immediately at 083 000 1000 if they have any information that could assist in locating Hamukwaya.
This incident has raised concerns about the safety of reporters, particularly those on assignment. Colleagues and friends describe Hamukwaya as a dedicated and passionate journalist, committed to bringing important stories to light.
