One Economy media awards to empower editors, journalists

Befree Youth Campus senior social worker Pefimbo Shipunda says the One Economy Foundation Media Summit and Awards are aimed at empowering editors and journalists.

She was speaking to Desert FM, adding that the event is to equip them with tools and ethical guidelines to prioritise and shape coverage on sexual reproductive health rights, gender-based violence and mental health.

“Basically just to touch base on some of the sensitivity around those topics, to help someone understand how sensitive a certain issue is and help them in the way they report that specific issue,” Shipunda said.

The awards will be presented to media practitioners covering sexual and reproductive health and rights, gender-based violence and mental health.

According to Shipunda, these are some of the issues faced in communities and the main issues institution work with when it comes to the BeFree campus.

She stated that the campus works closely with journalists within the foundation by inviting them to events or to the campus.

“We get feedback and of course we look at the kind of reporting, because if you look at
the past a lot of some people will focus a lot on the survivor but we want to draw the
attention away from that,” Shipunda said.

She said the awards will focus on work done by reporters from January 2024 to December 2024.

The awards will see two winners in which the cash price remains the same as 2024 with the first prize standing at N$10 000 and the second prize at N$5 000.

The deadline for submissions is 7 February and the ceremony will be on 21 February.
