THE newly resurfaced road between Ondangwa and Oshikango was opened by the Minister of Works, Transport and Communication, Joel Kaapanda, at Onuno village on Friday.
The 61,4-km road was first tarred in 1960 and forms a vital link between Namibia and Angola. “This road plays a crucial role in the economic development of Namibia by facilitating smooth transportation of goods between Namibia and Angola and is one of the busiest roads on the Namibian road network, with 1 700 vehicles per day, of which 12 per cent are heavy vehicles,” Kaapanda said during the ceremony. The rehabilitation work cost N$96 million, of which Government contributed N$55 million and the German government N$41 million.Germany had contributed N$432 million to the development of rural roads in northern Namibia since Independence, Kaapanda said.He singled out the Kongola-Katima Mulilo, Mururani Gate-Rundu, Wenela-Katima Mulilo-Ngoma, Ongha-Ongwediva, Ondobe-Omafo and Ondangwa-Ohalushu roads as the most recent development projects funded by the German government.”This road plays a crucial role in the economic development of Namibia by facilitating smooth transportation of goods between Namibia and Angola and is one of the busiest roads on the Namibian road network, with 1 700 vehicles per day, of which 12 per cent are heavy vehicles,” Kaapanda said during the ceremony. The rehabilitation work cost N$96 million, of which Government contributed N$55 million and the German government N$41 million.Germany had contributed N$432 million to the development of rural roads in northern Namibia since Independence, Kaapanda said.He singled out the Kongola-Katima Mulilo, Mururani Gate-Rundu, Wenela-Katima Mulilo-Ngoma, Ongha-Ongwediva, Ondobe-Omafo and Ondangwa-Ohalushu roads as the most recent development projects funded by the German government.
