THE Ondangwa Town Council is battling infrastructure development challenges that are hindering the town’s growth, the town’s chief executive officer, Ismael Namugongo, has said.

Namugongo said several old settlements at the town are in dire need of basic services. However, due to limited funds, the council is unable to render effective service delivery on time.

He said this during the ground-breaking ceremony of Oluno Extension 1 road upgrade to bitumen standard project at Ondangwa on Monday .

“We need to work together and plan ahead together as residents of Ondangwa. Most of our old settlement areas do not have proper road infrastructure, sanitation, water and sewerage systems. We, as the council, have committed ourselves to tackle these challenges head-on and we will continue giving basic municipal services to our people in the old settlement areas,” said Namugongo.

The project, which will cost council nearly N$1,8 million will include a 1,3-kilomtre earth channel.

The council expects the project to be completed in two months.

Namugongo further said the council will continue providing quality road surface and municipal services to most of the old settlements.

The project was awarded to Try Harder Construction CC with Wana Engineering as the consultant.

In a quest to improve sanitation, the council has installed sewer and water reticulation systems in parts of Ext 28 (Onguta).

The sewer system will benefit 367 erven.

The project cost the council about N$7,5 million and was completed last month.

“The council has managed to fully service 178 erven with water and sewer systems and are now occupied. A total 102 erven are partially serviced, with water and sewer systems and electricity in the same area,” said Namugongo.
