Omuthiya creates firebreak to protect communities from veld fires

The Omuthiya Town Council has started clearing a 10-metre-wide cutline that will serve as a firebreak to protect local communities from veld fires.

The initiative, launched through the town’s emergency unit, aims to control and halt the spread of wildfires, particularly those originating from the Etosha National Park.

The effort was prompted by a recent wildfire outbreak in Etosha, which underscored the urgent need to strengthen regional preparedness and response measures.

The operation is focused on establishing protective barriers around vulnerable villages, including Ekulo, Onakasino, Okankororosa, Iihambwinene, Uudhiya, Okashana Kiiyanda and Iindongo ya Keelu.

Omuthiya Town Council disaster risk management team technical manager Petrus Fillipus on Tuesday said the firebreaks will provide vital protection for people, property, livestock and the natural grazing areas that are essential to rural livelihoods.

“The ongoing activity aims to cover over 50 kilometres of firebreaks,” Fillipus stated.

He urged community members to remain vigilant, report fires immediately and refrain from open burning during dry and windy conditions.

Fillipus also emphasised that coordinated action and community cooperation are key to reducing the risk and impact of veld fires in the region.
