Omusati celebrates Newspaper Cup triumph in style

The Omusati football team received a rousing welcome when they went on region-wide tour to show-off The Namibian Newspaper Cup on Saturday.

Omusati won the trophy after beating Oshikoto in the final of the annual tournament in Outjo over the Easter weekend. The team celebrated its victory in style last weekend by making stopovers in almost all 11 constituencies of the Omusati region to show the people the trophy.

They also took with them the Scorpion Zinc Under-17 Cup that they won in Windhoek last year.

The parade included a courtesy call to the palace of the Uukwaluudhi king at Tsandi, where the team and its management were warmly received by King Josia Shikongo Taapopi, Queen Lisa Nandjala Taapopi and other high-ranking members of the Uukwaluudhi Traditional Authority and members of the community.

King Taapopi thanked the team for bringing prominence, pride and joy to the region and gave them an ox for a feast.

“You make us proud. All of us from Omusati, and I call upon you to keep on playing well and winning,” the elated monarch said.

“What I want to remind you my boys is to always have discipline, because without discipline you will not go anywhere.

“I am sure you were guided by discipline when you played and won these cups. So remain disciplined my boys. We are proud of you and I am going to give you an ox to eat,” King Taapopi told the team.

King Taapopi advised the football administrators in Omusati to establish teams for girls in a bid to encourage more women to take up the sport.

The chairman of the Omusati regional team, Jacobus Aindongo, told The Namibian he hoped their success would inspire the entire region towards excellence in ventures across all sectors.

He promised that they will do their best to bring more cups to the region.

Aindongo led the team from Outapi, through Okalongo, Oshikuku, Ogongo, Okahao, Tsandi, Onesi and Ruacana constituencies where they were greeted by ululating well-wishers who showered them with an assortment of gifts and other tokens of appreciation.

Well known Ruacana businessman, Andreas Titus, the owner of Holiday Special Trading cc, gave the boys meat for a braai at Shaduka Trading business complex near Anamulenge in Ouatpi town.

Apart from the big braai, the owner of Shaduka Trading, Immanuel Shaduka, who sponsored the team on numerous occasions, gave them N$2 000.
