Omaruru cops don’t have licence to kill

OMARURU’S Police chief has denied giving officers at the town permission to shoot all dogs caught without a leash outside their owners’ property, as was reported in a community newspaper last week.

Warrant Officer Nicklaas Kaurimuje told The Namibian on Friday that an article published in the Omaruru Times last Friday, which caused great unhappiness among townspeople, was based on a simple warning he gave to a member of the public, rather than any official order to his subordinates. “This lady’s dog had tried to attack an officer of ours on his way to work.So she was warned about her vicious dogs, told to put them on a leash or we would shoot them,” he said.”If the dog tries to bite me, should I just leave it?” Kaurimuje said. The editor of the newspaper, Jane Church, on Friday agreed that the report had been based on a misunderstanding.”This lady’s dog had tried to attack an officer of ours on his way to work.So she was warned about her vicious dogs, told to put them on a leash or we would shoot them,” he said.”If the dog tries to bite me, should I just leave it?” Kaurimuje said. The editor of the newspaper, Jane Church, on Friday agreed that the report had been based on a misunderstanding.
