Okorusu Mine, a subsidiary of the Canadian company Northern Graphite near Otjiwarongo, has announced plans to retrench a significant number of employees.
According to Northern Graphite spokesperson Pav Jordan, the decision to downsize the workforce is not unexpected.
“To be clear, this decision is not a new one, but rather something we have been signalling for quite some time in our financial statements regarding the relocation of our processing plant at Okorusu directly to the mine site in Okanjande.
“An updated preliminary economic assessment on our Namibian operations will be published soon and will provide further details about the relocated processing plant that will be ready for production in 2024,” he said.
The move is aimed at optimising operations, reducing their carbon footprint, and facilitating future expansion of the plant, and the shift of the processing plant to the mine site requires a different set of skills, he said.
“Therefore, we are reorganising our team to deal with the new scope of our project and operations, today and well into the future. Our intention is to restaff in 2024, once we have completed the relocation of the facility and commissioned it to service customers,” he said.
