A coastal resident discovered dead fish and an oily substance along the Long Beach shore on Saturday.
She reported that her feet were covered with oil while walking along the beach.
She also noticed dead fish covered with an oily substance.
Authorities monitoring the situation suspect it was caused by an oil spill, possibly from ships in the Walvis Bay harbour.
The public is urged to not consume fish found on shore.
Erongo Regional Response and Coordination Group emergency response coordinator Brendon Scott notes the dangers of consuming the fish.
“The fish may be covered in bacteria and will cause food poisoning. We do not want a humanitarian crisis.
“The public is also urged not to collect crayfish or shellfish. We urge the public to inform us if they find other dead animals like seals,” he says.
Local authorities are monitoring the situation and will update the public.
Authorities on the ground include the Erongo police, the Namibian Ports Authority, and the Namibian Coast Conservation and Management project.
