Ohangwena residents relocated amid floods

The Ohangwena Regional Council has, for the past few days, relocated scores of people away from flood prone areas to temporary shelters in the region.

Ohangwena governor Sebastian Ndeitunga, whose office has been working hard to assess the flood from Angola, confirmed the arrival of the flood to the region.

“On Sunday, I spent the day visiting areas that are severely affected by the flood in the Ongenga, Engela, and Oshikango constituencies. All areas are flooded, but we have places that are severely affected such as Onamhinda and Eshoke, where houses are totally submerged. We also have places like Onghala B village where people are stuck because everywhere is surrounded by water,” says Ndeitunga.

He explains that doctors had been airlifted to attend to patients at Onghala B, while some patients have also been airlifted to hospital at Engela. He says most of the people sheltered at the relocation camps were children and the elderly.

Ndeitunga further urges communities in flood-affected areas to refrain from attempting to walk or play in the water.

“Children should be taken care of, it is very dangerous to play and walk in the flood water, especially in the evenings. We should take precaution and be safe.”
