NWR’s Thrilling Popa Falls Resort

Located a few kilometers south of Divundu in the Kavango East region, Popa Falls Resort is the ideal place for nature lovers and weary travellers who crave a little tranquility and peace of mind.

The resort is set up along the Kavango river, which along with the soothing sounds of cascading water and the stunning surrounding views of lush forest is the ideal place to appreciate the diversity to be found in Namibia.

While the falls are not literally falls as the name suggests but rather a series of rushing rapids carved through rock and created over time, the Popa Falls are a spectacular sight.

unpacks the beauty of the Namibia Wildlife Resorts (NWR) destination which boasts a range of accommodation options to suit those seeking luxury, adventure and relaxation.

Offering four different kinds of accommodation for guests to choose from – six river chalets, 10 campsites, four luxury units, and 10 river cabins – the facilities are both affordable and comfortable.

The charming river cabins scenically face the small river streams and are equipped with either single or double beds, a sofa and private bathrooms. Ever accommodating of Namibians and their love of flame grilled meat, the cabins also come complete with outside braai areas.

The luxury units are built on the bridge, on an island facing the main river stream. They ensure maximum viewing pleasure and a unique experience. Rooms are fitted with air-conditioning and mosquito nets to ensure ultimate comfort for guests. Along with the awe-inspiring surrounds and elegant setting, this is a resort you will return to time and time again.

The ever-present sound of the rapids are tenderly referred to as a ‘natural massage’ by the staff at the resort. In fact, this is the only place in that vicinity where one is constantly surrounded by the naturally comforting sound without having to go on a boat cruise.

Just like any other NWR establishment, Popa Falls Resort offers a 75% discount on accommodation to Namibian travellers for the month of March every year. The discount excludes breakfast.

“It is the independence special but we encourage people to visit us any time of the year because each season comes with its own perks,” said manager Rebekka Horaes.

The resort boasts various facilities including a conference venue, restaurant, tourist shop, swimming pool and a jetty bar, which is picturesquely set up along the river banks and allows guests to relax with a beverage while enjoying the sights and sounds of nature around them.

The resort also offers game drives at night. “It is something extra ordinary and exclusive to Popa Falls,” said Horaes.

Guests can opt to entertain themselves by going on a boat cruise and a game drive at the Bwabwata National Park which is situated less than 20 kilometres from the resort. Here one can see a variety of wildlife including water buffalo, elephants, hippos, crocodiles and antelopes among other wildlife species as well as over 450 species of birds.

Throughout my stay at the resort, what stood out besides the breathtaking scenery is the standard of the accommodation, good service by the staff members and being made to feel special and welcomed by the very attentive hosts.

It is evident that the staff at Popa Falls Resort understand that guests will only return if they are offered the best service and friendliness is the most important aspect in their service.

“We make sure that our service is flexible enough for our guests and we do not only stick to what is in black and white as we listen to the needs of our guests by giving them what they want,” said Horaes.

Another staff member Mathias Tuwane added that being attentive towards the needs of their guests is one aspect that makes their service outstanding.

“We have to serve our guests and offer them the best hospitality to make their stay here worthwhile,” he concluded.
