Nurses day celebrated

Health minister Kalumbi Shangula has assured the public that the ministry will continue to promote and safeguard the well-being of healthcare workers, nurses and midwives by ensuring that appropriate safety policies and guidelines are in place and consistently implemented.

“The ministry will further ensure that nurses and midwives are well prepared to face the anticipated global challenges in healthcare,” he said in a statement on International Nurses/Midwives Day.
The day is observed on 12 May, under the theme: ‘Our Nurses, Our Future’.

Office of the Prime Minister director Inge Murangi, in narrating her nursing journey, pointed out that challenges faced by nurses today and in the past are not the same.

She was speaking during an event at the Intermediate Hospital Katutura in Windhoek on Friday.

“Nursing was different because we didn’t have the challenges that you guys have. We had eight beds in the ward, a clean ward… Is it what we see today? No, and it’s not by desire. The population has grown, diseases have doubled,” she said.

Speaking at the same event, nurse Loide Karihinga said nursing was a calling. She said when the opportunity arose after school to study nursing, she grabbed it.

“I finished Grade 12 and the opportunity was presented to me. I told my mother, I am going to nursing school, this is what I want,” Karihinga said.
