THE National Union of Namibian Workers (NUNW) intends to bring an urgent application before the High Court for an interdict against the City of Windhoek to stop the implementation of municipal rate increases of between 10 per cent and 15 per cent.
Calling the hikes ‘unjustifiable’, ‘preposterous’ and ‘insensitive’, NUNW President Alpheus Muheua issued a statement last night warning the Municipality that the union ‘will leave no stone unturned in all our efforts to ensure that justice prevails’.
His statement follows a NUNW press conference on Tuesday, where Secretary-General Evilastus Kaaronda not only lashed out at the city fathers, but also called on Government to intervene and ‘put an end to this impunity’.
The union’s fury was sparked by a report in The Namibian last Friday that the City Council approved N$1,4 million for entertainment, parties and festivals at the expense of several community projects.
Approving an entertainment budget costing the residents N$1,4 million as well as a wage bill of more than a billion dollars is an insult to the intelligence and patience ‘of our people’, Muheua said.
He also accused the Municipality of trying to mislead the ‘NUNW and many other organisations and individuals in respect of their self-serving tariff increases’.
