Former president Hifikepunye Pohamba said late founding president Sam Nujoma was seriously ill and unable to talk during their last interaction.
Pohamba said this in an interview with the Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC) at Okanghudi village in the Ondobe constituency.
According to Pohamba, he visited Nujoma in the hospital in January this year when he was informed that the liberation struggle icon had been hospitalised.
“I found him in a terrible condition. When I left the hospital, I was wondering whether comrade Sam Nujoma [would wake] up one day and [I could] meet with him to talk to one another as it had been the case in the past,” Pohamba said.
He said Nujoma’s death did not come as a shock to him because he expected anything to happen after visiting the hospital.
“The colleague fought for his life for many days,” Pohamba added.
Pohamba, who succeeded Nujoma as president 20 years ago, described him as a brother, leader and comrade.
